• NECK PAIN

Neck pain is one of the biggest reasons patients visit the clinic. Many people can develop a stiff and painful neck for no obvious reason.

NECK PAIN

Many people can develop a stiff and painful neck for no obvious reason, it doesn’t always have to happen after an injury! Pain can appear to start after sleeping awkwardly, sitting with poor posture or maybe whilst gardening, resulting in minor muscle or ligament strain. However, there are many other causes of neck pain too such as:

  • Arthritic Pain – caused by wear and tear, the joints and discs of the neck can often get stiff and reduce movement. In turn, this makes the neck muscles work hard to support the neck and results in pain. By releasing the tight muscles, commonly the pain reduces, and better movement occurs.
  • Neck Joint Strains – the little ligaments in the neck can often get strained, cause pain and often stops you turning to look over your shoulder.
  • Trapped Nerves – whilst not physically trapped, there are several things in the neck that can pinch or push on a nerve and give you not only neck pain, but often pain that upsets your shoulder and arm too.

  • Shoulders and ribs –– Just like neck pain can contribute to shoulder pain, sometimes it can also be the other way round. Pain is an odd thing, it can be coming from an area you’d never even thought had a problem like ribs and shoulders!
  • Stress – frequently when we’re stressed, we clench our muscles without thinking about doing so to “brace” ourselves against the thing we’re worried about. Over long periods of time, this can cause our muscles to ache.

Sadly, as we go through daily life, the discs and facet joints of the neck can naturally become worn. Whilst any degeneration cannot be reversed, osteopathy can help deal with the pain and improve range of movement for the joints of the neck, helping you to stay mobile and comfortable.

There are so many other things that can cause neck pain too. We use a detailed consultation to pinpoint exactly where your pain is coming from, so we can select special tests to make sure we don’t miss anything important before we treat you.

Treatments often includes one, or a combination, of the following modalities:

  • Osteopathy looks at how the neck joints work and aims to restore good movement by combining joint mobilisations to improve stiffness, manipulations (‘clicking’) and soft tissue therapies such as massage, stretching and myofascial release. Treatments always discuss rehabilitation and often we give appropriate strengthening exercises and dietary advice to help prevent further injury.
  • Soft Tissue Techniques (massage, IASTM, stretching, myofascial release) provides a deep tissue massage to the body tissues that can focus on muscles relevant to the affected area. Along with osteopathy, massage can help restore efficient lymphatic flow.
  • Acupuncture can often help relieve pain from injuries and conditions effecting the back and is great for areas that are too tender to treat with hands on treatments.
  • Kinesiotaping can help with a multitude of things including reducing swelling and bruising along with offering gentle, non-restrictive support to the area.

We make sure we are thorough with our consultations, so we don’t leave any stone unturned. This allows us to tailor our treatments to your specific needs, so you get the best from your time in our care.
